There are two ways for you to immediately change your mail forwarding configuration; there is a third way that is only available to your friendly local sysadmin.
If you are only interested in using the vacation utility, please go to https://vacation.ucolick.org/ and follow the on-screen instructions; it is strongly reccommended that you find an alternative to using the vacation utility (please read the warnings on the vacation webpage). If you want to configure the vacation utility at the UNIX prompt, this option is also available.
The vacation website provides one mechanism to change your mail forwarding settings; follow the on-screen prompts, and you can establish new mail forwarding without necessarily using the vacation auto-responder.
- The second mechanism is to make changes manually via a NICS-managed Linux or Solaris workstation. All of the configuration files for your local mail configuration reside in:
/home/public/username
For example, the mail forwarding file for lanclos@ucolick.org would be:
/home/public/lanclos/.forward
And its contents, to forward lanclos@ucolick.org to lanclos@ucsc.edu would be (one line only):
lanclos@ucsc.edu
If you want to specify more than one address, they need to be separated by commas. For example:lanclos@ucsc.edu, lanclos@astro.ucsc.edu
The third mechanism, which is only available via NICS, is system-level mail forwarding. This is option is typically exercised by users that have left UCO/Lick, and want their mail forwarded to a new address. We will cheerfully forward all of your e-mail (note that this will include all of your spam) for as long as you want it forwarded; send an e-mail to nics@ucolick.org, and let us know where you would like your e-mail to land.
