ANSYS is engineering simulation software. UCO/Lick Observatory and the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz pay annual maintenance for a pool of licenses available to UCO/Lick and School of Engineering users.
Who Can Run ANSYS
Users on the UCO/Lick network have direct access to the ANSYS license service.
Access to the ANSYS license service from outside the UCO/Lick network is restricted to registered IP addresses. For computers with static IP addresses, this is a one-time registration. For computers with dynamic (DHCP) IP addresses, you will need to update your registration each time your IP address changes. To register, please e-mail your request to NICS with the following information:
- Your name
- Your affiliation with SOE (who you are, who you work with/for)
- Your IP address
If you do not know your IP address...
On a computer running Linux:
- 1. Open a terminal.
- 2. Enter "ifconfig" at the prompt, and press the "Enter" key.
- 3. Copy the output of the "ifconfig" command.
4. Paste the output into your e-mail to NICS.
On a computer running Windows:
1. Open a command prompt window (Click Start -> Run, Enter "cmd" at the prompt, and click "OK")
- 2. Enter "ipconfig" at the prompt, and press the "Enter" key.
- 3. Right-click in the window, and select "Mark" from the context menu.
- 4. Click-and-drag to highlight the output of "ipconfig" command.
- 5. Right-click in the window, and select "Copy".
6. Paste the output into your e-mail to NICS.
Obtaining ANSYS
The current supported version is ANSYS 11 Service Pack 1. ISO images of the DVD installation media are available for download from this site. Please be aware that access is restricted to UCSC networks only.
Installing ANSYS
In order to use the UCO/Lick ANSYS 11.0 license pool, you will need to install the License Management tools with the following options:
1. Is this a license server machine? No 2. Do you want to continue with setup Yes to configure this system to be a client system? 3. Port 1055 4. 1 license server running the ANSYS "check" FLEXlm License Manager 5. Hostname license.ucolick.org
If the License Manager finds license files from an older ANSYS install, you can update the license server information by running the "ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility", and clicking the "Specify the License Server" button. Select the old server entry, and click "Edit Selected Server". Replace the old values with the new values from items 3-5 above.
Checking out ANSYS licenses while abroad
While ANSYS license check-out is normally restricted to the IP addresses of users that have registered with NICS, it is possible for users with UCO/Lick unix accounts to check out licenses while abroad by opening a connection through the UCO/Lick firewall. For this you will need:
- 1. The SSH Secure Shell application (standard on all NICS-managed Windows hosts)
- 2. Your UCO/Lick unix user name and password
3. A copy of this SSH connection profile
- 4. An active Internet connection
Start with the following steps:
1. Save the SSH connection profile (linked above) to your Desktop (or somewhere you can find it) 2. Double-click on the profile, supply your user name, and click "OK" 3. Supply your unix password and click "OK"
Once connected, the SSH Secure Shell application should read "Connected to ssh.ucolick.org" at the bottom of the window. If this is your first time running ANSYS in this configuration, you will additionally need to perform the following steps:
1. Run the "ANSLIC_ADMIN Utility" and click the "Specify the License Server" button 2. Select the old server entry, and click "Edit Selected Server" 3. Set the "Port" value to "1055" (no quotes) 4. Select "1 license server running the ANSYSFLEXlm License Manager" 5. Set the "Hostname" value to "localhost" (no quotes)
