The SolidWorks Office suite is commercial 3D mechanical design and analysis software. NICS manages SolidWorks support and licensing contracts on the behalf of specific UCO/Lick users, but does not maintain a pool of generally available licenses.
Purchasing SolidWorks Office
To figure out which option will work best and be most cost-effective for you, please email NICS with some information about where and how you plan to use SolidWorks.
There are three primary versions of SolidWorks: SolidWorks Office (core application), SolidWorks Office Professional, and SolidWorks Office Premium. A package matrix is available on the SolidWorks website. All of our existing licenses are from the University Research edition. An Academic edition is also available, though it's use is strictly limited to coursework, and all output is watermarked.
Installing SolidWorks Office on NICS-managed Windows hosts
Each user has access to the installation files for the version of SolidWorks Office they are licensed to run.

Each version is available as a 32-bit or 64-bit installer. Most users run 32-bit Windows, and will need the 32-bit installer. Those of you running 64-bit Windows know who you are. To start the installation process, find your specific version below, and copy the entire contents of the box. Then click "Start", then "Run", paste in the installer string, and click "OK".

Extended Check-Out Procedures for Laptops
For workstations, it is simply enough to run the SolidWorks Office application. While the application is in use, a license remains checked out from the pool. When the application is closed, the license is immediately returned to the pool.
For laptops on the move, it is necessary to check out licenses for a discrete period of time before leaving. In order to perform an extended check-out from the UCO/Lick Network, simply follow these steps:
1. Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "SolidWorks 2007 Edition SP4.0" -> "SolidWorks Tools" ->"SolidNetWork License Administrator" 2. On the "License Borrowing" tab, select a "Borrow until" date. 3. Ctrl-click to select the appropriate licenses. (The required licenses below plus any other, optional licenses) Product Version Required Licenses ============================================================== SolidWorks Office Professional SolidWorks SolidWorks Office Professional SolidWorks Office Premium SolidWorks SolidWorks Office Premium ============================================================== 4. Click "Borrow" and "OK".
Please be aware that at a minimum, you must check out both the base "SolidWorks" license, plus an additional license for the version you intend to run ("SolidWorks Office Professional" or "SolidWorks Office Premium"), as noted in the table above. Consider leaving yourself some leeway when checking out licenses in case of extensions or delays to your travel. You can use this same procedure to return licenses before the check-out expiry date -- simply substitute "Return" for "Borrow" in step 4 above.
Remote License Server Access
In order to reach to the SolidWorks license server while abroad, you'll need to connect through the UCO/Lick firewall. Once connected, you can either run SolidWorks Office directly from a remote workstation, or perform the extended license check-out procedures detailed above. To do this, you will additionally need:
- 1. The SSH Secure Shell application (standard on all NICS-managed Windows hosts)
- 2. Your UCO/Lick unix user name and password
3. A copy of this SSH connection profile
- 4. An active Internet connection
Start with the following steps:
1. Save the the SSH connection profile to your Desktop (or somewhere you can find it) 2. Double-click on the profile, supply your user name, and click "OK" 3. Supply your unix password and click "OK"
Once connected, the SSH Secure Shell application should read "Connected to ssh.ucolick.org" at the bottom of the window. As long as this connection remains active, you should be able to connect to the license server using our default SolidWorks configuration.
