There are two fundamental types of services provided by NICS: ongoing support for specific computers and user accounts, and an hourly rate for issues that fall outside of the more traditional support structure. Use the links below to skip ahead to a specific service type.

Computer and Hardware Support

Fees effective July 1, 2014

We can only provide services for hosts that are connected directly to the UCO/Lick network. Hosts on a different network, either on-campus or at your home, are outside the scope of our support coverage.

  • Unsupported host ($43 per month)
    • A unique, static ucolick.org hostname for your computer
    • Fundamental network services, such as DHCP, DNS, and perimeter firewall protection
    • Access to NICS-funded software licenses, including IDL, MATLAB, and Mathematica
  • Supported host ($85.50 per month)
    • All of the services provided to an unsupported host
    • Complete support coverage for all hardware problems, and industry-standard software applications
    • Limited support for research-specific hardware and software, as might be required when connected to specialized lab equipment
    • Full backups of all data on the machine, performed every other day
    • A full acount is required for local login ("at-the-keyboard") access
  • Itinerant laptop ($43 per month)
    • All of the services provided to a supported host, except for regular backups
    • Backups only provided on an ad-hoc basis as needed by the client
    • System is pre-installed with our supported MacOS image
    • Itinerant laptops only see occasional use, rarely on the UCO/Lick network
  • Unsupported printer ($15.75 per month)
    • A unique, static ucolick.org hostname for your printer
    • Fundamental network services, such as DHCP, DNS, and perimeter firewall protection
    • The end-user is responsible for all configuration, repairs, and printer consumables (toner, maintenance kits, etc.)
    • This option only makes sense with an 'unsupported' host.
  • Supported printer ($43 per month)
    • All of the services provided to an unsupported printer
    • Complete support coverage for all hardware problems, and assistance configuring the printer for use
    • The end-user is financially responsible for purchase of printer consumables (toner, maintenance kits, etc.), and for any repairs by a third-party
  • Server room co-location ($26.25 per month per host)
    • A home for your supported or unsupported host in the NICS server room, which provides
      • Cooling
      • Limited battery back up capacity via central UPS
      • Physical security (keypad, alarms)
      • 9am-5pm remote hands for reboots, etc
    • Machines occupying large amounts of rack space (such as clusters) may be assessed more than one co-location fee
  • Disk storage on the NICS SAN ($26.25 per month, no storage limit)
    • Attachment of an arbitrary amount of disk storage to an existing fibre-channel infrastructure
    • Access to that storage via NFS (UNIX, Mac OS) and Samba (Windows, Mac OS) exports
    • Direct access is most easily accomplished via a supported host
    • All arrays are configured with some hardware redundancy, and strong checks to ensure data integrity

Please nics@ucolick.org for questions about computer support.
